Domotics

Compass designs and produces domotics in housing, theatre’s and offices. The word ‘domotics’ is derived from the Latin word domus (house) and robotics. Technologies and services are integrated, with the aim to increase safety, living enjoyment and working comfort. Technological innovations offer more and more possibilities. We can connect climate control, safety systems, dataconnections, lighting concepts and more.   

We see great possibilities for ‘Smart buildings’ in which scenarios are programmed to allow all systems to work together seamlessly. Systems are connected to a domotics installation that is remotely controllable and can respond to your presence (geofencing).  

HIGHTECH 3-D ENGINEERING TOOL

Thanks to our high-tech 3D engineering tool Compass is able to design the most realistic, reliable and efficient routes for the construction of (underground) infrastructure. This reduces time and excavation damage as unexpected underground obstacles are no longer an issue.

First, we prepare an inventory from all available information sources, we undertake an intensive survey and use laser scanning, GPR (ground penetrating radar), radio waves, inspection cameras and as-built details.

Based on this we generate a complete 3D picture of all the infrastructure above and below ground level. This 3D image forms the starting-point for the development of the route.

PHOTO-BOARD WITH HEIGHT DETECTION

Each day nearly 90 lorries collide with low bridges (source RWS). This causes both delays and financial losses. To address this problem Compass has developed the “photo-board with height detection”.

The height detector alerts the driver to the fact that the bridge is too low for his vehicle and produces a life-size full colour picture of the lorry. Initial test results are positive and indicate a 20% reduction in collisions.

INTERACTIVE ZEBRA CROSSINGS

Some zebra crossings are unsafe for pedestrians despite the fact that they have priority over vehicles. In crowded shopping streets or poorly lit areas a zebra crossing isn’t always sufficient to guarantee pedestrian safety.

To improve the level of safety in such areas Compass has developed the “interactive zebra crossing” a combined system which detects what needs to be detected. When a pedestrian approaches the interactive zebra crossing a lit sign is activated. The system comprises carefully coordinated detection cameras and LED lighting.

The LED lighting is set into the road surface (lane lights) and in the traffic signs. The system is vandal and weather proof and only detects relevant movement. This means the system only operates when a pedestrian approaches in the correct direction and isn’t activated for example by cyclists travelling passed.

DRIP’S EQUIPPED WITH A NEW COMMUNICATION PROTOCOL: DISPERANTO

The DRIPs (Digital Road Information Panels) which are currently on the Dutch highways use different communication protocols. This causes problems operating the DRIPs and connecting them to traffic control centres.

The majority of local authorities would therefore like to see the development of a standardised communication protocol. The newest such protocol is “disperanto”. Disperanto offers many advantages; it is applicable to all display types, all colours can be applied to it and it is a free, open protocol.

Compass is ensuring that existing DRIPs are adapted so that disperanto is operational and that the DRIP can communicate with, for example, MobiMeastro.

INTELLIGENT LIGHTING COLUMNS IN AN INTERACTIVE LIGHTING CONCEPT

Public lighting is increasingly being used to improve local areas. This so-called lighting concept is interactive via the glass fibre network, can be operated remotely and can be programmed in all RGB colours.

Thanks to intelligent lighting columns (fitted with LED) the lighting can be set, for example on orange during the World Cup or on national holidays it could be set to red, white and blue. Compass is working to develop a base design for interactive lighting concepts into a functional, realisable and affordable detailed design and arranging the laying, connection and installation.

The interactive and changeable outdoor lighting system in Eindhoven, used by Compass is one of the first in the world: project reference “Strijp-S”.

REPAIRING HIGH VOLTAGE CABLES QUICKER AND WITHOUT LASMOF

If a crane is out of service as a result of damage to the high voltage or glass fibre cables, for example during the loading or unloading of a ship, it can be very costly. Time and money are important so it is essential to be able to effect repairs quickly.

Together with DSG Compass has developed a technique to repair high voltage and glass fibre cables in situ and without cable joints.

This technique works without “thickened” cable joints so the cables can go back on the cable drum. So the old cable can be kept and the loading and unloading can be resumed more quickly.
