Rotterdam city Council works with Compass to improve safety on the Coolsingel II

26 August 2014

During August Compass worked on improving pedestrian crossings on the Coolsingel (one of Rotterdam’s main thoroughfares) over 6 nights.  Masts have been placed at 10 zebra crossings on both the left and right hand sides of the lanes of the Coolsingel.

These masts are equipped with signs with LED flashers. The road surface at the crossings has also been fitted Lane Lights. The LED flashers and Lane Lights flash when a pedestrian wants to cross. The system will be operational in mid-September, on schedule.

Compass is constantly striving to minimize the inconvenience for all involved. By completing all the work at each crossing in one go any noise nuisance was reduced. This approach also minimised any disruption to traffic.

Safety on the zebra crossings on the Coolsingel has been an issue for some time.  The number of accidents on and near the pedestrian crossings had to be reduced so Rotterdam City Council has adopted this system as a way to get motorists to pay more attention to pedestrians.
